On the left you see the battery, then the USB charging cable (standard mini-USB), then two adhesive mounts (one flat, one curved), followed to the right by a GoPro compatible adapter, and then a second mounting piece for orientation changes. Inside the box, you’ll have an assortment of parts. This gives you a bit of practice in how the mounts work. You’ll detach it by simply rotating the top portion of the mount away. This is a not so subtle hint to not throw away said mount. The VIRB will actually be attached to the box, using one of its own mounts. Once you remove the inner shell from the outer shell, you’ll find the unit hanging out inside: Perhaps with enough illegal drugs it might, but not by itself. See that glorious looking color screen below on the box shot? I promise you, it never looks like that. In fact, externally the only visible difference is the color. When push comes to shove, the VIRB Elite and VIRB regular contain the exact same components within the box. So – with that intro, let’s get into things. Also, because the technology world constantly changes, I try and go back and update these reviews as new features and functionality are added – or if bugs are fixed. But, if I’ve missed something or if you spot something that doesn’t quite jive – just let me know and I’ll be happy to get it all sorted out. I write these reviews because I’m inherently a curious person with a technology background, and thus I try and be as complete as I can. Lastly, at the end of the day keep in mind I’m just like any other regular athlete out there. Most of my ordered ones have since come in, and their box of mounts will head back shortly – just like always. They also sent over a box of mounts to start with until my retail mounts came in. That VIRB has already gone back to Garmin. ![]() Garmin had sent me over a VIRB Elite to start testing with until retail availability. In the case of this review, I own all the VIRB’s seen here (bought myself). Thus, much of this review will be focused on whether or not Garmin has been able to execute on that vision – and thus by extension whether or not they can realistically take any of GoPro’s pie. Where Garmin has the potential though to differentiate is the inroads in sports and fitness that primarily audio/video companies lack. There’s plenty of others much larger than Garmin, take Sony and JVC for example. Of course, large companies focusing their attention on the now billion-dollar business of GoPro is nothing new. Most notable however, is that they’re squaring off directly against the biggest player in the industry: GoPro. When Garmin announced the VIRB action camera late this past summer, it represented further expansion into the outdoor market, due to it’s significant product tie-ins with other Garmin products.

They are integrated as a part of circuits in smartwatches and fitness trackers. The cutting-edge pedometers are digitalized. Related: Amazfit GTR vs Amazfit GTS vs Stratos 3 Most use a mixture of “location services” signals to track you as you run or move, including GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network information, and deduce how many steps you’ve taken from your changing position. Others use GPS satellite navigation to figure out how far you’ve walked or run, using space satellite beacons rather than plodding mechanical counting of your everyday steps. These are microchips designed at right angles that recognize minute changes in force as you move your legs.īut who requires an electronic pedometer when you’ve got a smartphone? Most phones have location-tracking (GPS) devices of varying accuracy, and you’ll find plenty of pedometer apps in your favorite phone app store. They dispense with the swinging pendulum hammer and measure your steps with two or three accelerometers instead. Since they have no moving parts, they tend to be longer-lasting, more reliable, and considerably more realistic. If you struggle to stay motivated to regularly walk or stay active, there are also pedometers that will let you set goals and can nudge you towards achieving those daily goals or adjust them depending on how active you’ve been.More sophisticated pedometers (including some of the excellent ones made by Fitbit) work entirely electronically. One that includes an altimeter sensor means you’ll have the ability to track stairs climbed when you ditch the lift, as this can burn more calories compared with sticking to flatter terrain. What pedometer extras should you look out for?Ī nice large, bright display that can handle being viewed indoors and outdoors is important, as is keeping in mind that you want something stylish enough that you might be able to wear in a variety of places, depending on how much you want that pedometer on show. Thankfully, they’ll usually not take longer than a couple of hours to get back up to full capacity. If you’re opting for a fitness tracker with pedometer features however, then you’ll find yourself likely to be reaching for a charger every week or a couple of weeks. Thankfully, this means you won't have to take it out and replace it for months (maybe even a year), depending on how regularly you use it. Given that the sole purpose of a pedometer is just tracking steps, you’ll find they’re powered by the kind of coin cell batteries that power watches. What kind of battery life should a pedometer deliver? ![]() Which one is right for you really boils down to whether you care more about your progress over the day or you want a better idea of how your daily step counts change over time, in which case you will probably want a more advanced tracker. These bands will also normally connect to a companion phone app where you can dig deeper into weekly, monthly and yearly trends to get a better sense of your progress over time. Dedicated pedometers will show off data such as step counts, distance covered and calories burned on large, easy-to-view screens in a simple way, while fitness bands build in those pedometer features while also showing more data on dedicated watch screens. The choice here is between a more basic pedometer or an advanced fitness tracker. Here’s what to look for in a pedometer to make it a worthy walking companion… How does the pedometer display your stats? While you might have forgotten they existed, they’re still here to provide those basics and you can also find some that’ll throw more features in to give you a reason to keep it on 24/7. While a Fitbit or a fitness tracker can be helpful if you're training for a specific race or distance, you can strip things down to the basics with a pedometer and focus on counting steps as a simpler and less intense way to track your movement.īefore sports watches and smartwatches were on the scene, it was pedometers that we were obsessed with, which focused on accurately tracking steps during walks and even runs and had the ability to tell the time too. But sometimes it's absolutely fine to take a step away from that and just focus on getting moving in general. When it comes to tracking your exercise, there is a lot of pressure to always be running further and faster. ![]() For example, "Good Morning, Arun" is a string that has 13 characters, including spaces and punctuation.
